McBride Charles Ryan has designed the Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School Senior (PEGS). “The architects devised a figure-of-eight plan with a sequence of classrooms around the edges, a library at the centre and two courtyards within the voids. This layout allows every route to lead back to the library and also creates outdoor spaces that are protected from strong winds”. The complex is based on the infinity symbol, with the functions of the school circling around two outdoor, but enclosed, courtyards. The school is color coded so students can differentiate between different departments easily. The school’s architecture has a sense of ease and connectivity due to the attention to detail by the architects.
