Woldya, a town in northeast Ethiopia, has a new maternity care center designed by Xavier Vilalta Architects (XVA). The building is divided into two parts, the maternity unit and the waiting area. “The first one is the functional and operational medical space and the second, a temporary hostel for upcoming patients that need a place to stay before they enter in the final stage of their pregnancy”. The site is located 2112 miles above sea level and has a temperate climate, making the surrounding landscape quite striking. The architects tried to incorporate views and aspects of the nature into their medical unit. The maternity unit is comprised of three rectangular concrete structures connected by a central hall. The design reflects the local culture with its fractal design that appears in many artifacts throughout the area.
