Believe it or not, the first American city to host an Olympic games wasn’t New York (it never has), Chicago (also a never ran), or Los Angeles (hosted the games twice), but St. Louis, Missouri.  In 1904 the mid-west city hosted the summer games. They lasted for FOUR months. Can you imagine? And they didn’t even have the arch!
