Perkins + Will has built the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Buffalo in Amherst, New York. The new building, Davis Hall, “establishes a hybrid typology that creates a collaborative/interactive environment among electrical engineering and computer science disciplines”. The structure consolidates various scientific facilities that were previously spread out over seven different locations, and also completes a composition of buildings designed by Marcel Breuer in the late 1970s. The Perkins + Will hall has a geometric copper façade that bends diagonally at various angles. The building is on track to achieving LEED Gold certification and has a highly insulted building shell, high performance windows, energy efficient lighting, and a dedicated outdoor air handling unit. The interior is organized into two blocks, the computational and hardware research areas, that are connected by a glass gallery.
