ZGF Architects LLP has designed Randall’s Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. The 334,000 square foot building at Legacy Emanuel integrates pediatric care in one facility where it was previously spread out. The hospital houses 165 inpatient beds for “Acute Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Pediatric Care”, the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorder Unit, a Children’s Emergency Room, and a Day Surgery Unit. The structure also includes a 418-car parking garage for patients and brand new landscaping surrounding the edifice. One of the main design motivations for the architects was to incorporate elements of the Oregon and Southwest Washington natural landscapes. The interior and exterior use soft, curving shapes to formulate the building, providing a mirror to the setting and creating an easy environment for hospitalized children and their families.
