Riehen By: Leon
Herzog & de Meuron founded their practice in 1978. In 1979, they won a competition to design a public swimming pool for Riehen. The project was halted indefinitely in 1982 after many unsuccessful proposals were received. Decades later, in 2007, the firm was “commissioned to rethink the project and proposed to abandon the conventional pool concept with its mechanical and chemical water treatment systems in favor of a pool closer to natural condition with biological filtration. The Naturbad Reihen was modeled “after the natural pool on the local ‘Badi’, Basel’s traditional wooden Rhine-rise aths, which combine a lively atmosphere with a timeless appearance”. The natural setting of these public baths and combined landscape design make an oasis for citizens enjoying the bathing and recreation areas.
