Tectoniques Architects has built the INRA Research Laboratories in the Lorraine region, France. The site is situated right in the middle of the beautiful Amance forest, and the architects took that to heart in their design. “These high-level technical research centres host French and foreign researchers who work together to study the ecology and genomics of forests”. The structure accommodates 500 people at any given time. The IRNA Research Laboratories have an “all wood” visible exterior, alluding to the function of the building and maintaining the natural forest habitat. The architects cleverly hid any man-made or technical components behind strips of timber on the southern facade and a curved wooden northern facade. The two sides of the building are connected by a central atrium, which acts as a bee-hive of collaboration and research.
