Watts Towers Watts Towers By: Parker Knight

UCLA is studying the stability of the historic Watts Towers in South Los Angeles. The structures were designed by Simon Rodia and built in 1954. A major concern that Los Angeles has had for the past several years are the cracks that exist in the area. These terrain related faults, sun and wind exposure, and California’s many earthquakes have possibly left the towers very unstable. Engineers from UCLA are overseeing the study and wroking with the Los Angeles Museum of Art’s preservation committee for the Watts Towers. The National Science Foundation is contributing funds to the engineers to assist with their research. The Watts Towers are designated as a national historic landmark, “the seven structures are made of steel rods that have been covered by various material, including cement, glass, ceramic, and found objects.”
