Wang Weijen Architecture has been exploring how to reinvent the courtyard for a high-density urban context. In Hung Hom, Hong Kong they built a 20 story high 26,000 square meter university. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University delves into the typology of the courtyard and appropriates it in an urban context. The four courtyards appear as voids in the facade and have “become activity centers for four-levels of classrooms. By offsetting the empty spaces throughout the building, rooms inside get more natural sunlight and visible access to green vegetation. The library in the university building is set at the halfway point to encourage good movement patterns. The modular university takes advantage of its height without sacrificing good design and landscape.
