Ziggurat Style By: Elliott Brown
A geometric, ziggurat-inspired health center in Estonia, Tartu sits between two dormitory buildings. Created by Kavakava Architects, the Tartu Health Care College is designed with setbacks to allow the maximum amount of natural light into the dorm buildings next door and classrooms in the new structure. One side is open, with almost entirely glass panelling, while the outer facade is red brick that mirrors the surrounding buildings. The architects created a connection between the dorms and health college. The interior consists of a core with a library, information center and cafeteria, with classrooms and other learning facilities rising up around the center. An emphasis on sustainable and local materials is present in the building, and the construction practices also utilized green methods, including natural ventilation and a highly insulated exterior shell.
